The Big Picture
The Jackson Community Center for the Arts project was undertaken for a non-profit entity, in cooperation with the Town of Jackson and Teton County, to create a campus that brought together 20 local arts and education organizations. Constructed in two phases, the Center for the Arts includes a 525-multi-functional seat theater. In addition to accommodating a wide variety of performance types, the theater can also modify its seating capacity to ensure an intimate experience for every audience. The underside of the seating arena is exposed and visible from the lobby below. Consisting of four levels, the public area of the Center features lower and upper lobbies, a box office, gallery, rehearsal facilities, access to multi-level seating, scene shop, ceramics studio, dance studios, drawing and painting studios, and classrooms that serve community organizations and academic institutions, as well as other administrative and support spaces. The lobby features a curved, wood-clad form hovering above and acting as a window to the pre-performance activity and visually connecting the public space to the mountains beyond.
Ingenuity in Action

After Phase 1 construction was complete, Center of the Arts received several large donations – “if you build it, they will come” – making Phase 2 possible.  The Jackson winter in 2006 was especially harsh.  During the last concrete pour, temperatures were 17 degrees below zero.  In order to remain on schedule, GE Johnson installed significant heaters and weather protection to ensure concrete placements were being performed per cold weather requirements with additional measures.  During these harsh conditions of pouring the 80 foot concrete tower, no recordable injuries occurred – a testament to our Zero Injury program and commitment of our team.
