Cañon City, Colo. – April 2, 2019 – A groundbreaking ceremony was held March 29, 2019, at Cañon City Middle School in Cañon City, Colo., to celebrate the start of construction for the school that will serve sixth through eighth grade students.
The new middle school is part of a multi-facility repair, renovation, and upgrade project made possible by a successful bond and a Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) grant. The design-build project being performed by RTA Architects and GE Johnson Construction Co., is scheduled to be completed in winter of 2021.
The project involves the demolition of part of the existing school and parking lot, remodeling the gym that was originally built in the 1980s, and the construction of a new addition.
The ceremony was attended by district and school representatives, members of the GE Johnson team, students from Cañon City Middle School, and fourth and fifth graders who will be attending the new school in the future. Some of the students participated in the groundbreaking, donning hard hats and plunging shovels into the soil.
