United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum Holds Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and Opens to the Public

On Thursday, July 30, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The socially distanced event had approximately 80 guests including Colorado Governor Jared Polis, Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers, Olympic & Paralympic athletes, and Jim Johnson, president and CEO of GE Johnson.

“This is a historic and transformational day for Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region,” mayor Suthers stated. “Henceforth we will be the place where Olympic excellence is enshrined for the ages. Just as people’s dreams come true, a city’s dream has come true.”

General contractor GE Johnson, broke ground on the 60,000 square-foot building in June of 2017 and completed the facility in April so that exhibits could be installed prior to the grand opening. The museum, located at 200 S. Sierra Madre Street in Colorado Springs, is expected to draw 350,000 visitors a year. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Anderson Mason Dale Architects, the museum is recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the official showcase of Team USA.

Guests of the museum will enjoy a customizable experience with interactive exhibits, one-of-a-kind memorabilia on display, and a Parade of Nations sensory experience, simulating the honor athletes feel as they walk into the opening ceremony. The museum is the only of its kind in the country.
