West Hotel Expansion and Renovation

The Broadmoor, a legendary, five-star destination hotel located in Colorado Springs, has been serving guests from around the world since 1918. In 1974, GE Johnson constructed the Broadmoor West and in 2013, we were invited back to expand and renovate the iconic hotel.

The Big Picture

The project included the demolition of existing exterior walls, interior elements, the porte-cochere, and various site elements. Guestrooms were added to the existing 5th floor, with two entirely new guestroom floors added to the structure. Additionally, existing guestrooms were renovated along with the first floor lobby, restaurant and bar.

The exterior of the structure was also updated, receiving a new porte-cochere, and various exterior modifications and additions, including new roof elements. Extensive MEP work was required throughout the renovated and new areas. The $47 million project was completed on an ultra fast-track schedule – completed in only 27 weeks.

Ingenuity in Action
During the completion of the $47 million renovation and expansion of the Broadmoor West Hotel, GE Johnson was challenged to add three levels to the existing structure while expanding the perimeters of the hotel by nearly eight feet – increasing the size of the existing suites dramatically and creating new accessible balconies and patios – in less than six months. With the hotel planning to open just days after the proposed completion date, the project was “schedule guaranteed” and extensive preplanning and prefabrication was utilized to meet this incredibly tight schedule. Prefabricated columns and walls were utilized throughout the project to support new balconies. Within the hotel, crews installed custom-built, prefabricated luxury bathrooms. The bathrooms were delivered to the site and hoisted into place floor by floor before the exterior skin of the structure was put in place. These prefabricated units were crucial to maintaining the rigorous project schedule and add a beautiful and relaxing element to every guest room. GE Johnson finished work 48 hours early and in a matter of a few short days, guests were once again enjoying their stay at the luxurious Broadmoor West.
