The Big Picture
This 490,000-square-foot facility in Vail Valley, Colorado offers luxury guest rooms, an expansive spa and fitness center, a bar and restaurant, an outdoor pool, meeting rooms, offices and underground parking. Located near spectacular hiking and rafting, it also provides direct access to the Riverfront Express ski lift, serving Beaver Creek Mountain. The project also received LEED Silver certification – the first Colorado hotel to achieve this status.
Ingenuity in Action
Despite potential labor shortages and winter conditions, zero project delays incurred over the course of the two-year schedule. The building’s structural system helped keep the project on track by utilizing a mini-t system which allowed for flexibility in the design of the pieces, and efficient installation of the panel wall slabs. By renting storage lots for precast pieces, GE Johnson preemptively averted construction delays caused by highway and pass closures due to weather and enabled inventory of 3 – 5 days worth of precast panels on the west side of Loveland and Vail passes in case of inclement weather. The team was able to install 12 – 15 pieces of precast panels per day with each of the four cranes, allowing the structure to be completed two months early despite one of the snowiest winters in recent years.
