Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Ribbon Cutting Celebrates Region’s First Pediatric Hospital

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., July 25, 2019 – Last Wednesday, July 17, nearly 400 people gathered to celebrate the ribbon cutting on the recently completed Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs. The 294,000-square-foot, 111-bed facility will serve as southern Colorado’s first pediatric-only hospital.

Designed by FKP Architects and built by GE Johnson Construction Co., the project team created a unique program called Kid of the Quarter to involve patient ambassadors for Children’s Hospital Colorado in the construction of the new hospital. The very first Kid of the Quarter, Lauren Schwamb, 13, served as one of the emcees for the ribbon cutting event, along with Kaden Ford, 16. Additional speakers included:

  • Mayor of Colorado Springs John Suthers
  • President and CEO of Children’s Colorado Jena Hausmann
  • President of Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs Margaret Sabin
  • Chief Operating Officer of Children’s Hospital Colorado Greg Raymond
  • Jalen Thompson, a patient and cancer survivor
  • President and CEO of GE Johnson Jim Johnson

“As a business leader, parent, community member, and donor, I cannot be prouder of the work our team did on this project and what this facility means for Colorado Springs and the quality of care it will provide to our kids,” said Jim Johnson.

The event concluded with a special visit from Denver Broncos’ mascot Miles, who arrived at the event via Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Flight for Life® Colorado helicopter.

Announced in November 2015, the hospital broke ground in November 2016 and began active construction of the building in June 2017. The ribbon cutting follows nearly two years of construction and the successful licensing and accreditation of the hospital. The hospital opened as a pediatric trauma level II facility.
